While most Red Mages are already attuned to and willing to learn as much as they can, some realize that the best way to learn about the world is not just as a combatant but also a minstrel. Declaring themselves Lipstick Lyricists after both their especially romantic methods and their tendency for performance, these Red Mages take on a path of support and people knowledge.
Skills
The Lipstick Lyricist replaces Spellcraft with Perform.
Path of the Bard
The Lipstick Lyricist takes on a unique path, built upon their unique knowledge of the wider world.
This modifies and replaces Path of the Red Mage.
Bardic Knowledge (Ex)
The Lipstick Lyricist adds half their class level (minimum 1) to all knowledge skill checks and may take Knowledge skill checks untrained. Additionally, they gain all Knowledge skills as class skills.
Bardic Performance (Su)
A Lipstick Lyricist is trained to use the Perform skill to create magical effects on those around him, including himself if desired. He can use this ability for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + his Charisma modifier. At each level after 1st a Lipstick Lyricist can use bardic performance for 2 additional rounds per day. Each round, the Lipstick Lyricist can produce any one of the types of bardic performance that he has mastered, as indicated by his level.
Starting a bardic performance is a standard action, but it can be maintained each round as a free action. Changing a bardic performance from one effect to another requires the Lipstick Lyricist to stop the previous performance and start a new one as a standard action. A bardic performance cannot be disrupted, but it ends immediately if the Lipstick Lyricist is killed, paralyzed, stunned, knocked unconscious, or otherwise prevented from taking a free action to maintain it each round. A Lipstick Lyricist cannot have more than one bardic performance in effect at one time.
At 7th level, a Lipstick Lyricist can start a bardic performance as a move action instead of a standard action. At 13th level, a Lipstick Lyricist can start a bardic performance as a swift action.
Each bardic performance has audible components, visual components, or both.
If a bardic performance has audible components, the targets must be able to hear the Lipstick Lyricist for the performance to have any effect, and many such performances are language dependent (as noted in the description). A deaf Lipstick Lyricist has a 20% chance to fail when attempting to use a bardic performance with an audible component. If he fails this check, the attempt still counts against his daily limit. Deaf creatures are immune to bardic performances with audible components.
If a bardic performance has a visual component, the targets must have line of sight to the Lipstick Lyricist for the performance to have any effect. A blind Lipstick Lyricist has a 50% chance to fail when attempting to use a bardic performance with a visual component. If he fails this check, the attempt still counts against his daily limit. Blind creatures are immune to bardic performances with visual components.
List of Bardic Performances:
Countersong (Su): At 1st level, a Lipstick Lyricist learns to counter magic effects that depend on sound (but not spells that have verbal components.) Each round of the countersong he makes a Perform (keyboard, percussion, wind, string, or sing) skill check. Any creature within 30 feet of the Lipstick Lyricist (including the Lipstick Lyricist himself) that is affected by a sonic or language-dependent magical attack may use the Lipstick Lyricist’s Perform check result in place of its saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the Perform check result proves to be higher. If a creature within range of the countersong is already under the effect of a non-instantaneous sonic or language-dependent magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it hears the countersong, but it must use the Lipstick Lyricist’s Perform skill check result for the save. Countersong does not work on effects that don’t allow saves. Countersong relies on audible components.
Distraction (Su): At 1st level, a Lipstick Lyricist can use his performance to counter magic effects that depend on sight. Each round of the Distraction, he makes a Perform (act, comedy, dance, or oratory) skill check. Any creature within 30 feet of the Lipstick Lyricist (including the Lipstick Lyricist himself) that is affected by an illusion (pattern) or illusion (figment) magical attack may use the Lipstick Lyricist’s Perform check result in place of its saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the Perform check result proves to be higher. If a creature within range of the Distraction is already under the effect of a non-instantaneous illusion (pattern) or illusion (figment) magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it sees the Distraction, but it must use the Lipstick Lyricist’s Perform check result for the save. Distraction does not work on effects that don’t allow saves. Distraction relies on visual components.
Fascinate (Su): At 1st level, a Lipstick Lyricist can use his performance to cause one or more creatures to become fascinated with him. Each creature to be fascinated must be within 90 feet, able to see and hear the Lipstick Lyricist, and capable of paying attention to him. The Lipstick Lyricist must also be able to see the creatures affected. The Distraction of a nearby combat or other dangers prevents the ability from working. For every three levels a Lipstick Lyricist has attained beyond 1st, he can target one additional creature with this ability. Each creature within range receives a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the Lipstick Lyricist’s level + the Lipstick Lyricist’s Cha modifier) to negate the effect. If a creature’s saving throw succeeds, the Lipstick Lyricist cannot attempt to fascinate that creature again for 24 hours. If its saving throw fails, the creature sits quietly and observes the performance for as long as the Lipstick Lyricist continues to maintain it. While fascinated, a target takes a –4 penalty on skill checks made as reactions, such as Perception checks. Any potential threat to the target allows the target to make a new saving throw against the effect. Any obvious threat, such as someone drawing a weapon, casting a spell, or aiming a weapon at the target, automatically breaks the effect. Fascinate is an enchantment (compulsion), mind-affecting ability. Fascinate relies on audible and visual components in order to function.
Inspire Courage (Su): A 1st level Lipstick Lyricist can use his performance to inspire courage in his allies (including himself), bolstering them against fear and improving their combat abilities. To be affected, an ally must be able to perceive the Lipstick Lyricist’s performance. An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. At 5th level, and every six Lipstick Lyricist levels thereafter, this bonus increases by +1, to a maximum of +4 at 17th level. Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability. inspire courage can use audible or visual components. The Lipstick Lyricist must choose which component to use when starting his performance.
Inspire Competence (Su): A Lipstick Lyricist of 3rd level or higher can use his performance to help an ally succeed at a task. The ally must be within 30 feet and able to see and hear the Lipstick Lyricist. The ally gets a +2 competence bonus on skill checks with a particular skill as long as she continues to hear the Lipstick Lyricist’s performance. This bonus increases by +1 for every four levels the Lipstick Lyricist has attained beyond 3rd (+3 at 7th, +4 at 11th, +5 at 15th, and +6 at 19th). Certain uses of this ability are infeasible, such as Stealth, and may be disallowed at the GM’s discretion. A Lipstick Lyricist can’t inspire competence in himself. inspire competence relies on audible components.
Suggestion (Sp): A Lipstick Lyricist of 6th level or higher can use his performance to make a suggestion (as per the spell) to a creature that he has already fascinated (see above). Using this ability does not disrupt the fascinate effect, but it does require a standard action to activate (in addition to the free action to continue the fascinate effect). A Lipstick Lyricist can use this ability more than once against an individual creature during an individual performance. A Will saving throw (DC 10 + 1/2 Lipstick Lyricist’s level + Lipstick Lyricist’s Cha modifier) negates the effect. This ability affects only a single creature (but see mass suggestion, below). Suggestion is an enchantment (compulsion), mind-affecting, language-dependent ability and relies on audible components.
Dirge of Doom (Su): A Lipstick Lyricist of 8th level or higher can use his performance to foster a sense of growing dread in his enemies, causing them to take become shaken. To be affected, an enemy must be within 30 feet and able to see and hear the Lipstick Lyricist’s performance. The effect persists for as long as the enemy is within 30 feet and the Lipstick Lyricist continues the performance. The performance cannot cause a creature to become frightened or panicked, even if the targets are already shaken from another effect. Dirge of doom is a mind-affecting fear effect, and it relies on audible and visual components.
Inspire Greatness (Su): A Lipstick Lyricist of 9th level or higher can use his performance to inspire greatness in himself or a single willing ally within 30 feet, granting extra fighting capability. For every three levels a Lipstick Lyricist attains beyond 9th, he can target one additional ally while using this performance (up to a maximum of four at 18th level). To inspire greatness, all of the targets must be able to see and hear the Lipstick Lyricist. A creature inspired with greatness gains 2 bonus Hit Dice (d10s), the commensurate number of temporary hit points (apply the target’s Constitution modifier, if any, to these bonus Hit Dice), a +2 competence bonus on attack rolls, and a +1 competence bonus on Fortitude saves. The bonus Hit Dice count as regular Hit Dice for determining the effect of spells that are Hit Dice dependent. Inspire greatness is a mind-affecting ability and it relies on audible and visual components.
Soothing Performance (Su): A Lipstick Lyricist of 12th level or higher can use his performance to create an effect equivalent to the mass cure serious wounds, using the Lipstick Lyricist’s level as the caster level. In addition, this performance removes the fatigued, sickened, and shaken condition from all those affected. Using this ability requires 4 rounds of continuous performance, and the targets must be able to see and hear the Lipstick Lyricist throughout the performance. Soothing performance relies on audible and visual components.
Frightening Tune (Sp): A Lipstick Lyricist of 14th level or higher can use his performance to cause fear in his enemies. To be affected, an enemy must be able to hear the Lipstick Lyricist perform and be within 30 feet. Each enemy within range receives a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the Lipstick Lyricist’s level + the Lipstick Lyricist’s Cha modifier) to negate the effect. If the save succeeds, the creature is immune to this ability for 24 hours. If the save fails, the target becomes frightened and flees for as long as the target can hear the Lipstick Lyricist’s performance. Frightening tune relies on audible components.
Inspire Heroics (Su): A Lipstick Lyricist of 15th level or higher can inspire tremendous heroism in himself or a single ally within 30 feet. For every three Lipstick Lyricist levels the character attains beyond 15th, he can inspire heroics in one additional creature. To inspire heroics, all of the targets must be able to see and hear the Lipstick Lyricist. Inspired creatures gain a +4 morale bonus on saving throws and a +4 dodge bonus to AC. The effect lasts for as long as the targets are able to witness the performance. Inspire heroics is a mind-affecting ability that relies on audible and visual components.
Mass Suggestion (Sp): This ability functions just like suggestion, but allows a Lipstick Lyricist of 18th level or higher to make a suggestion simultaneously to any number of creatures that he has already fascinated. Mass suggestion is an enchantment (compulsion), mind-affecting, language dependent ability that relies on audible components.
Deadly Performance (Su): A Lipstick Lyricist of 20th level or higher can use his performance to cause one enemy to die from joy or sorrow. To be affected, the target must be able to see and hear the Lipstick Lyricist perform for 1 full round and be within 30 feet. The target receives a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 the Lipstick Lyricist’s level + the Lipstick Lyricist’s Cha modifier) to negate the effect. If a creature’s saving throw succeeds, the target is staggered for 1d4 rounds, and the Lipstick Lyricist cannot use deadly performance on that creature again for 24 hours. If a creature’s saving throw fails, it dies. Deadly performance is a mind-effecting death effect that relies on audible and visual components.
Armored Mage (Flamboyant) (Ex)
At 3rd level, while wearing light or no armour and while not using a shield, the red mage gains a +1 dodge bonus to AC and increases the maximum dexterity bonus of any light armor he wears by 1. Every four levels thereafter (7th, 11th, 15th and 19th) these bonuses increase by +1 to a maximum of a +5 dodge bonus to AC and a +5 to the maximum dexterity bonus allowed. This dodge bonus is doubled against attacks of opportunity the red mage provokes by moving. In addition, he gains a +5ft enhancement bonus to his base land speed. At 7th level, this increases to +10ft.
This ability counts as, and does not stack with, agility training.
Ruby Arcana
The following Ruby Arcana are exclusive to the Lipstick Lyricist
| Ruby Arcana | Requires | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Arcane Performance (Su) | Red Mage 9 | The Lipstick Lyricist may continue a Bardic Performance as a free action if their weapon or armor is affected by Arcane Pool, without using rounds of Bardic Performance. |
| Bardic Masterpiece | The Lipstick Lyricist may obtain a Bardic Masterpiece, so long as they meet the prerequisites. | |
| Bardic Inspiration | Red Mage 6 | The Lipstick Lyricist may use a round of Bardic Performance as a free action to roll a d6. This is known as an Inspiration Dice This result may be granted to any ally within 30 ft as a free action, as an attack, damage, skill, ability check, save or initiative bonus, or to any enemy within 30 ft as a free action as an attack, damage, skill, ability check, save or initiative penalty. A Lipstick Lyricist may store as many Inspiration dice as their Charisma bonus. |
| Bardic Miracle | Red Mage 9, Bardic Inspiration | Nothing bad ever happens to a Lipstick Lyricist, or those they follow. Whenever the Lipstick Lyricist does one of the following and spends an Arcane Pool, they gain a Miracle Dice: Vengeance: Reduces a creature to 0 or fewer hit points with a spell or weapon attack. Destroying an unattended object, reducing a helpless or unaware creature to 0 or fewer hit points or reducing a creature that has fewer Hit Dice than half the red mage’s character level to 0 or fewer points does not activate this condition. Incorrigible: Successfully uses Dispel, Counterspell, Countersong or similar abilities Sacrifice: Witnesses an ally fall to 0 or fewer hit points Valour: Successfully critical hit, roll an unmodified 20 on a save roll, or successfully roll a 20 on a concentration check (without using a Miracle Dice) Inspire: Roll a 6 on a Bardic Inspiration roll (requires the Bardic Inspiration arcana) When you gain a Miracle Dice, roll a d20. This value cannot be changed. Keep your Miracle Dice’s results marked, and you can store a number of Miracle Dice equal to the Red Mage’s character level. Alternatively, you may roll a d3, d4, d6, d8, d10 or d12. As a free action that may be done whenever a roll is declared for an ally within 30 feet, the Lipstick Lyricist may use Miracle D20s instead of one of the following: Attack rolls (this may provide a critical threat), Save rolls, Initiative rolls, Concentration rolls, Skill rolls, Ability checks, Caster level check. Miracle D3s, D4s, D6s, D8s, D10s, and D12s are used instead of damage or healing dice. Both of the previous effects are known as performing a Bardic Miracle. Miracle Dice are not modifiers or inherently modified dice (so, for example, if you use a Miracle Dice with a value of 20 it is just one roll of 20). A Lipstick Lyricist may only use one Miracle Dice per ally per turn. |
| Bardic Style | Red Mage 12, Bardic Miracle | When using a lingering Bardic Performance, all affected allies (including the Lipstick Lyricist) may be affected by one of the following. The Lipstick Lyricist may only choose one, and it is their Style until they retrain. Deeds, Not Words: When an ally affected by this Style charges, they may perform a full attack rather than a single attack, by both losing the charge bonus and taking a -2 penalty to attack rolls. This may be used with special full attacks, such as Spell Combat. Quick to Anger: When affected by this style, an ally may inflict an additional point of damage or ignore 1 point of DR. This increases by 1 per 3 levels after 12. Additionally, if an ally affected by this ability charges, they get to make the second attack on their highest BAB, if they have one. Children of Destiny: When affected by this style, an ally that takes damage may roll 1d6 and reduce the damage they take by that much. Additionally, whenever the Lipstick Lyricist would perform a Bardic Miracle, they may discard an additional Miracle Die to count the number in a Miracle Die as the highest possible. Martyred Blood: Gain a second Miracle Dice from the Sacrifice condition. Additionally, when an affected ally attacks under this condition, they may add 1 per ally below half health to their attack and damage rolls. Devout Serenity: Affected allies automatically succeed Will saves against fear effects. Additionally, whenever the Lipstick Lyricist performs a Bardic Miracle, they roll a d6. On a 5+, they receive a Miracle die. Additionally, when being charged by an opponent, an affected ally may perform an Attack of Opportunity upon the charging foe, with a +2 bonus. Stoic Endurance: When affected by this style, an ally that takes damage may roll 1d8 and reduce the damage they take by that much. Additionally, they gain a +2 morale bonus to AC. This is additive to other Morale bonuses to AC. |
