Mage Robes
Mage Armor
Cost 50 gil Weight 1 lbs
Armor Bonus 0 Max Dex Bonus - Armor Check Penalty 0
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 0%, Speed 30 ft./20 ft.
Mage Robes are simple cloth robes lined with minor protective enchantments. While worn by something with a caster level, and at least 1 MP in their pool, the robes provide a +2 armor bonus.
Arcane robes cannot be enchanted as normal armour.
Armored Coat
Medium Armor
Cost 50 gil; Weight 20 lbs.
Armor Bonus +4; Max Dex Bonus +3; Armor Check Penalty -2
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 20%; Speed 20 ft./15 ft.
This sturdy leather coat is reinforced with metal plates sewn into the lining. An armored coat is more cumbersome than light armor but less effective than most medium armors. The advantage of it is that a person can don it or remove it as a move action (there is no “don hastily” option for an armored coat). If worn over other armor, use the better AC bonus and worse value in all other categories; an armored coat has no effect if worn with heavy armor. The only magic effects that apply are those of armor, clothing, or items worn on top.
Additionally, a character with the leather body ability that is proficient with this armour treats an armoured coat’s Maximum Dexterity Bonus as two points higher for the purposes of that ability.
The armoured coat originally appeared in the Advanced Player's Guide, pg. 179 and has been adjusted for use with the pFF system.
Armoured Jacket
Light Armor
Cost 60 gil; Weight 12 lbs.
Armor Bonus +3; Max Dex Bonus +5; Armor Check Penalty -1
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 10%; Speed 30 ft./20 ft.
This leather jacket is reinforced with strips of metal sewn throughout the lining. An armoured jacket is not the most effective of the light armours but has a couple of advantages:
For starters, a person can don it or remove it as a move action (there is no “don hastily” option for an armored jacket).
Secondly, it is almost impossible to distinguish between armoured jackets and ordinary leather jackets by sight alone (DC 30 perception check, though if the difference is obvious if you can physically feel an armoured jacket), which makes them popular amongst street gangs.
If worn with other armor, use the better AC bonus and worse value in all other categories; an armored jacket has no effect if worn with medium or heavy armor. The only magic effects that apply are those of armor, clothing, or items worn on top.
Additionally, a character with the leather body ability that is proficient with this armour treats an armoured coat’s Maximum Dexterity Bonus as two points higher for the purposes of that ability.
Formalwear, such as tuxedo jackets or ball gowns, could also be designed to function as armoured jackets, however such armours are always masterwork quality, to account for the fine quality of the outer layers.
An armoured jacket can be emblazoned at no additional cost.
Armoured Jacket, Sleeveless
Light Armor
Cost 60 gil; Weight 10 lbs.
Armor Bonus +2; Max Dex Bonus +6; Armor Check Penalty 0
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 0%; Speed 30 ft./20 ft.
This variant of an armoured jacket has had the sleeves removed, reducing its protective capabilities, but completely unhinders the arms, making it popular for spellcasters or those who favour agility. A sleeveless armoured jacket has the same abilities as an armoured jacket except as noted.
Sleeveless armoured jackets can also be used to represent flak jackets or similar armours. Though, in such a case, they would be “overt” in the fact they’re armours.
A character that has an AC Bonus class feature, such as the Monk’s AC Bonus and similar AC Bonus abilities that add an ability modifier to AC while unarmoured (Gambler excluded as they may wear light armour without penalty), may wear a sleeveless armoured jacket and still benefit from that ability, though they reduce the AC bonus granted by that ability by 2.
Leather Jacket
Light Armor
Cost 5 gil; Weight 5 lbs.
Armor Bonus +1; Max Dex Bonus -; Armor Check Penalty -0
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 0%; Speed 30 ft./20 ft.
Though not intended to function as armour, a leather jacket is nevertheless tough and durable enough to function as such in a pinch. A person may don or remove a leather jacket as a swift action (there is no “don hastily” option for a leather jacket). Both a sleeveless jacket (Sometimes called a “cut”) as well as a leather trench coat or duster use the same statistics.
A character that has an AC Bonus class feature, such as the Monk’s AC Bonus and similar AC Bonus abilities that add an ability modifier to AC while unarmoured (Gambler excluded as they may wear light armour without penalty), may wear a leather jacket and still benefit from that ability, though they reduce the AC bonus granted by that ability by 1.
Plated Duster
Heavy Armor
Cost 250 gil; Weight 30 lbs.
Armor Bonus +7; Max Dex Bonus +0; Armor Check Penalty -4
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 35%; Speed 20 ft./15 ft.
This knee-length jacket is reinforced with metal plates throughout. This makes a plated duster more cumbersome than medium armours, but less effective than most heavy armours. The key advantage is that a person may don a plated duster hastily as a full-round action (That provokes an attack of opportunity) and can don it normally in only 1 minute and may do so without help.
Additionally, you may treat a plated duster as medium armour when determining if you can move in it at full speed or when sleeping in it (which stacks with the slumbering modification or being made from mithril). It does not count as medium armour for any other purpose, such as determining the price of special materials.
Additionally, a character with the leather body ability that is proficient with this armour treats an armoured coat’s Maximum Dexterity Bonus as one point higher for the purposes of that ability.
Mage's Buckler
Shield
Cost 25 gil Weight 1 lbs
Armor Bonus 0 Max Dex Bonus - Armor Check Penalty -1
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 0%, Speed 30 ft./20 ft.
A mage's buckler is a small forearm mounted crystal, that does nothing unless worn by something with a caster level. If the wearer has a caster level and at least 1 MP in their pool, the buckler provides a +1 shield bonus. The Mage's Buckler functions as a buckler in all other respects.
Mage's Buckler cannot be enchanted as a normal shield.
SOLDIER Uniform, 3rd Class
Light Armor
Cost 100 gil; Weight 10 lbs.
Armor Bonus +2; Max Dex Bonus +6; Armor Check Penalty 0
Spell Failure Chance 5%; Speed 30 ft./20 ft.
The typical armor of neophytes in the famous SOLDIER organization, this uniform is made of heavy cerulean cloth with a Kevlar weave, and has pauldrons and a standard-issue helmet. Wearing this uniform while not either being or having been part of SOLDIER can run the risk of drawing the ire of Shinra, although those with 3rd Class uniforms are given very low priority. In areas with a Shinra presence, there is a 5% chance of being held suspect per day spent in such areas; the consequences are up to the GM. However, the wearer also gains a +4 bonus to Disguise checks when making checks to pass as a member of SOLDIER.
Note: Use of this armor is recommended only in campaigns where Shinra exists, although GMs may still allow it, if they wish. SOLDIER uniforms are not normally purchasable, even in a setting in which Shinra exists, and while in the end it is based on GM discretion, player characters should not typically be allowed to purchase SOLDIER uniforms during character creation.
SOLDIER Uniform, 2nd Class
Light Armor
Cost 700 gil; Weight 10 lbs.
Armor Bonus +3; Max Dex Bonus +6; Armor Check Penalty 0
Spell Failure Chance 5%; Speed 30 ft./20 ft.
Worn by SOLDIER veterans and prodigies alike, this uniform is made of durable red cloth with a substantial Kevlar weave, a thick leather girdle and has pauldrons and a high-quality helmet. Wearing this uniform while not either being or having been part of SOLDIER can run the risk of drawing the ire of Shinra, although those with 2nd Class uniforms are given middling priority. In areas with a Shinra presence, there is a 15% chance of being held suspect per day spent in such areas; the consequences are up to the GM.
SOLDIER Uniform, 1st Class
Light Armor
Cost 1,800 gil; Weight 10 lbs.
Armor Bonus +4; Max Dex Bonus +6; Armor Check Penalty 0
Spell Failure Chance 0%; Speed 30 ft./20 ft.
1st Class SOLDIERs are a rare breed, and thus are given the best of the best equipment, and are even allowed to personalize it. A standard 1st Class SOLDIER uniform is made of black or navy blue cloth laced with Kevlar and mythril fibers, with the highest grade of materials for the pauldrons and helmet. Wearing this uniform while not either being or having been part of SOLDIER can run the risk of drawing the ire of Shinra, and those with a 1st Class uniform are given very high priority. In areas with a Shinra presence, there is a 45% chance of being held suspect per day spent in such areas; the consequences are up to the GM. However, the wearer also gains a +2 bonus to Disguise checks when making checks to pass as a member of SOLDIER.
Recon Armour
Light Armor
Cost 200 gil; Weight 8 lbs.
Armor Bonus +2; Max Dex Bonus +7; Armor Check Penalty -1
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 10%; Speed 30 ft./20 ft.
Looking more like a vest or a short-sleeved shirt, recon armour is for those whom the “light” is more important than the “armour”. As the name would suggest, recon armour is usually used by forward scouts, but also sees usage by support troops such as trauma medics or field engineers. Due to its low profile, recon armour is often worn under a set of fatigues or other loose clothing. A character with the leather body ability that is proficient with this armour treats recon armour’s Maximum Dexterity Bonus as two points higher for the purposes of that ability.
While it is usually worn on its own as light armour, recon armour can be worn alongside another suit of light armour, increasing the armour bonus of the better armour by +1 (In case of a tie, the recon armour is considered the “better” armour”), to a maximum armour bonus of +4 (Before enhancement bonuses are accounted for), using the worse value in all other categories. While combined in this way, recon armour's maximum dexterity bonus is reduced to +5 (+7 for the purposes of leather body). This can be improved by using special materials or the nimble modification, but both armours must be adjusted in the same way. (For example, you'd need darkleaf studded leather and darkleaf recon armour, or a nimble spidersilk bodysuit and nimble recon armour. Darkleaf and mithral are considered the "same" modification for this purpose).
The magic effects that apply are the ones with the highest total equivalent bonus. In case of a tie, use the recon armour’s enchantments. (Assuming that the other armour has an armour bonus of +3 or less. Otherwise, recon armour's enchantments are ignored.)
Additionally, recon armour can be donned or removed as a move action (There is no “don hastily” option for recon armour), though for obvious reasons this is not possible if another suit of light armour is currently being worn.
Note: For the purpose of special materials, recon armour is considered to be made of cloth/leather.
Infantry Armour
Light Armor
Cost 550 gil; Weight 15 lbs.
Armor Bonus +4; Max Dex Bonus +5; Armor Check Penalty -3
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 15%; Speed 30 ft./20 ft.
Other than those who prefer recon armour, infantry armour is, as the name might suggest, the most common type of armour that common soldiers wear. Infantry armour comes with a helmet. Infantry armour’s check penalty does not apply to the drive or ride skills, as it is designed in such a way as to not impede those tasks.
Note: For the purpose of special materials, infantry armour is considered to be made of metal.
Trooper Armour
Medium Armor
Cost 1350 gil; Weight 25 lbs.
Armor Bonus +6; Max Dex Bonus +1; Armor Check Penalty -5
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 30%; Speed 20 ft./10 ft.
Trooper armour is a full-body armour, similar to full plate except that the wearer is effectively sealed inside it from head to toe, though the helmet can be removed and resealed without needing to take off the entire thing. Trooper armour is designed to protect against all sorts of environmental hazards and function in any situation. This armour is almost never worn by front-line troops. Instead, trooper armour is usually reserved for field commanders, high security personnel or special forces. Trooper armour is always considered masterwork (This is already accounted for in the price).
Provided the trooper armour does not have the broken condition, it provides the following benefits:
- Total immunity to inhaled and contact poisons as well as similar inhaled irritants such as smoke. It doesn’t provide any protection against being immersed, however, nor does it provide air in a low-ox environment. The immunity against inhaled toxins and irritants uses standard gas mask filters, which last about 12 hours and cost 50 gil each.
- A +5 circumstance bonus on Fortitude saving throws against exposure to hot and cold weather (This doesn’t stack with a cold weather outfit). Trooper armour also protects the wearer against many environmental hazards, which functions as DR 5/magic but only against hazard damage (For example, trooper armour would protect the wearer from a sandstorm or exploding windows, but wouldn’t protect them against an entangle spell).
Lastly, while it is not standard to the design, trooper armour can have other amenities built into it, either at creation or retrofitted later, such as night vision goggles, metal detectors, communication systems, audio or video recording systems, GPS, etc, but those must be paid for separately and their weight is added to the armour’s, however these amenities are always available to the wearer and do not require the use of hands.
Note: For the purpose of special materials, trooper armour is considered to be made of metal.
Heavy Trooper Armour
Heavy Armor
Cost 3550 gil; Weight 60 lbs.
Armor Bonus +8; Max Dex Bonus +1; Armor Check Penalty -7
Arcane Spell Failure Chance 40%; Speed 20 ft./10 ft.
Heavy trooper armour is practically never used as a “day to day” armour, unlike trooper armour. Instead, heavy trooper armour is usually used in special circumstances, such as when storming an enemy position. Heavy trooper armour otherwise has the same benefits as regular trooper armour and can likewise be built with the same technological amenities.
Note: For the purpose of special materials, heavy trooper armour is considered to be made of metal.
