With the march of time, new weapons have come into existence. Powerful tools of fire and smoke. Perhaps it’s only natural that these seemingly magical weapons were entered into the spellbooks of those who’ve had magic in their veins. After all, what’s more inevitable than a wizard with a gun?
Converting your Character to a Gun Mage
The gun mage is a class template suitable for use with the black mage, white mage and time mage classes. When converting a character to a gun mage, the character loses or changes the following class features.
Black Mage
- The Black Mage loses Arcane Barrage at level 1, they instead gain their first instance of Arcane Barrage at level 6. They also lose Onyx Talent at levels 2 and 4, gaining their first talent at level 6. Gun Mage may be stacked with archetypes or class templates that modify but not replace Arcane Barrage.
White Mage
- The White Mage gives up Overheal.
- The White Mage loses Opal Talent at levels 2 and 4, gaining their first talent at level 6.
Time Mage
- The Time Mage gives up Manipulate: Speed.
- The Time Mage loses Temporal Talent at levels 2 and 4, gaining their first talent at level 6.
Arcane Gun (Su)
The gun mage gains the Weapon Proficiency (firearms) feat, and one or two of his firearms can be arcane guns. Arcane guns are normal one-handed or two-handed firearms in the hands of others, as they were normal firearms before the gun mage imbued them with magic. In a gun mage’s hands, they both fire projectiles (bullets and pellets) and cast magic. At 1st level, the gun mage decides whether he wants to have one or two arcane guns at a time. If the gun mage chooses to have only one arcane gun at a time, spells fired through the arcane gun that require an attack roll have a ×3 critical hit multiplier.
A gun mage can cast any ranged touch attack, cone, line, or ray spells through his arcane gun. When he casts through the arcane gun, the gun’s enhancement bonus (if any) is a bonus to the spell’s attack rolls or to the spell’s saving throw DCs. Yet there are dangers inherent to this method. If any of the spells’ attack rolls result in a natural 1 (a misfire), or a natural 20 is rolled on any saving throw made against the spell by a target (an overload), the arcane gun gains the broken condition. If the arcane gun already has the broken condition, the gun explodes. When a gun explodes, it lets loose a blast of non-elemental damage, or if the spell has the elemental descriptor, it deals the descriptor’s type of energy damage instead. In the case of spells with multiple elemental descriptors, roll randomly among the types to determine the type of damage dealt by the blast. The blast is centered on a single intersection within the gun mage’s space (gun mage’s choice) and deals 1d6 points of the appropriate energy damage or non-elemental damage per effective spell level of the spell cast. Any creature within the blast other than the gun mage can make a Reflex saving throw to halve the damage. The Reflex save DC is calculated using the MP of the spell being sacrificed.
A gun mage can attune his arcane guns at the start of each day. That attunement lasts until the gun mage attunes to a new gun, even if a formally attuned gun is destroyed.
Mage’s Ballistics (Su)
Starting at 2nd level, while wielding a firearm and having at least 1 MP, the gun mage may treat their firearm as a mage’s weapon. While doing so, they use their caster level in place of their base attack bonus to hit, although doing so does not grant additional attacks. In addition, reloading does not require the use of actual bullets. This does not change the firearm’s damage type or make attacks with the firearm touch attacks.
Occult Clear (Su)
Starting at 4th level, a gun mage can use their magic to flush out their firearm after a misfire. As a swift action, they can spend one MP to remove the broken condition from a single firearm they are currently wielding. This ability can only repair a firearm that gained the broken condition as a result of a firearm misfire or an overload from their Arcane Gun feature; if the gun was otherwise damaged, it does nothing.
