Some Black Mages are more attuned to one element or another, and thus suffer in their knowledge of the opposing element. These Black Mages adopt the guise of Elementalists, and focus harder on their skilled element.
Elementalist is an archetype of the Black Mage class
Elemental Expertise (Ex)
At 1st level, the Elementalist selects one element to gain mastery over, and suffers in their skills related to the opposing element. The table below shows the list of elements and what opposes each element. At 6th and 11th level, the Elementalist can select another favoured element, but cannot pick one that is opposed with the element chosen previously. They can choose the opposed element of their level 1 element at 11th level.
At 16th level, the Elementalist also gains Shadow as a favored element (Though they do not gain Holy as an opposed element).
| Element | Opposition |
| Fire | Water |
| Ice | Fire |
| Water | Lightning |
| Lightning | Earth |
| Earth | Wind |
| Wind | Ice |
When casting spells of their opposed element, the black mage's caster level is halved (Minimum 1) and when casting spells of his chosen element, he treats his black mage level as 50% higher, rounded down. This affects how much MP a black mage can spend on his spells, but does not allow the black mage to cast spells with a base cost of greater than his black mage level, however. This does not apply to a chosen element in opposition to another chosen element.
This ability replaces Spell Proficiency
Elemental Barrage (Su)
Elementalist are capable of spending a little more energy to make their magics go that bit further. Whenever casting a Black Mage spell of their favoured element, the Elementalist may spend 1 MP to increase the spell’s range by 30 feet. This can be done once per spell at level 1, and increases by one at 6th and every 5 levels after, to a max of 4 times at 16th level. MP spent on Elemental barrage counts towards Passive Augments of Black Mage spells. When casting spells of their favoured element, for every MP spent on Elemental Barrage, the damage die of the spell increases by one (1d6 increases to 2d6). MP spent in this way is in addition to the MP he spends on casting his black mage spells. Elemental Barrage also adds a bonus 1d6 damage die, and a bonus 30 foot range increase for all spells of their favoured element
This ability modifies Arcane Barrage
Resistance of the Elements (Ex)
Elementalists are skilled at defending themselves from their own favoured elements. At 2nd level, the Elementalist gains Resist 5 against their favoured elements. At 6th level, this becomes Resist 10. At 14th level, this becomes Strong: Element. However, at 2nd level, they suffer Weak: Element against their opposed elements.
This replaces the Onyx Talents at 2nd, 6th and 14th levels.
Elemental Seal (Su)
From 7th level onwards, the Elementalist can empower their spells with aetherial MP. When casting a spell, the Black Mage may choose to spend the same amount of aetherial MP as they did normal MP (Including MP spent on augmentations or metamagic feats, but not on elemental barrage.), but only on spells of their chosen elements. If they do so, the creature's interaction with the spell is reduced by one step (Absorb>Immune>Strong>Neutral>Weak). Status effect interactions do not drop below neutral, however. In addition, MP spent via Elemental Seal contributes to the upgrading of spells via passive augments.
This replaces Obsidian Seal
Elemental Expulsion (Su)
This functions as Obsidian Expulsion, except the burst’s damage type is of one of the Elementalist’s favored elements, and uses D8s in place of D6s
This modifies Obsidian Expulsion.
Elemental Mastery (Su)
At level 20, the Elementalist gains Absorb: Element for all of their favoured elements. When casting a spell of their favoured element, they reduce the MP cost they pay by 3, to a minimum of 1. This reduction affects the total MP cost they pay, not how much the spell costs or how much they augment it.
